TRIVIA

― During L:OVELESS' hiatus in 2014, she spent her time learning how to properly write and produce music from some of DM Records’ best. Since then, she’s become the main producer for L:OVELESS and ELPIDA, another group under Heart Media.
― She often receives Totoro plushies from fans who know that it’s one of her favorite movies. Her collection has gotten so big that she has to keep some of them at her Auntie’s house.
― Mina identifies as nonbinary and is open about this to her closest friends. Her sexuality is also not a secret, although it’s not public knowledge either.
― Her Japanese is the best out of her members, aside from Kotone. She started learning Japanese before she even became a trainee, using anime to help her pick up vocabulary words.
― She has a habit of locking herself away for days at a time when working on her music, and will go without talking to anyone until she’s satisfied with her work.
― Her dog, Moro, is named after a character from Princess Mononoke.
― L:OVEDOLLS started calling her ‘Mama Mina’ because of her caring, often maternal nature toward her members.
― Her alcohol tolerance is very low, and her face flushes easily when drinking. Despite this, she still enjoys drinking when going out with friends.
― It is a running joke with her members and fans that Mina "can't speak English". This is due to the fact that she's the only L:OVELESS member who never lived overseas before their debut. It also took her a long time to get a hang of the language, and has trouble with some of the pronunciation.
― Although she doesn’t like coffee, when she’s feeling exhausted, she might force herself to drink a cup to stay awake.
― Some netizens have theorized that she is queer based on her masculine aura, vocal support of the LGBTQIA+ community, and overly-friendly interactions with female idols. She is also known for her 'greasiness' with the L:OVELESS members.
― She has a pretty severe fear of abandonment, which is one of the reasons why she chose to continue living with Neo after they moved out of their dorm. She likes to joke that they'll be roommates until the day one of them dies.
― L:OVELESS’ debut song, Follow Me (Bo Peep), is one of her least favorite songs of all time.
― Although she often jokes that she hates men, both with friends and in some of her lyrics, she doesn’t actually have anything against them. She just thinks it’s funny to say.
― She’s one of the best cooks in her group, and is usually in charge of making meals when they’re together.

MUSIC STYLE: Black Eyed Pilseung, LDN Noise, Mospick, Ollipop
ㅤOn February 14th, 2010, Mina debuted in DM Records’ first group, L:OVELESS, as the main rapper, lead dancer, and vocalist. Following a wildly successful debut, L:OVELESS became known as one of the biggest groups at the time, best known for their infectious party music.
ㅤJust a year after their debut, the group took a hit when one of the members, Jade, was unexpectedly pulled from the lineup. Despite that bump, L:OVELESS went on to debut in both Japan and China in 2011 and 2012. Due to their popular demand, the group was worked to the bone as they juggled comebacks in three countries, and it eventually led to their Korean fanbase dwindling. In 2014, L:OVELESS was put on an official hiatus, and another member, Kotone, left the group to pursue a different career.
ㅤDuring the hiatus, Mina began learning how to write and produce music for the group, and when they returned in 2015, it was with one of her songs. From then on, she became the group’s main producer, producing hit after hit.
ㅤIn early 2020, the group announced that they would be opening their own label, Heart Media. Following the company’s opening, L:OVELESS appeared on a KBS2 show, L:EGACY, which celebrated the group’s ten years in the industry as they mentored the six trainees they would later debut as Heart Media’s first group.
ㅤThe end of 2020 brought about the first major solo schedule of her career so far, as she was announced as a producer and judge for season 9 of Show Me The Money in October. Appearing regularly on the show, without any of her members accompanying her, was a big step toward gaining more fans for herself in Korea. She was able to showcase not only her talent and producing skills, but also her lovable personality that was often pushed to the back when with the L:OVELESS members.

Biography

ㅤBorn to a single woman who had been cast away by her family, Rhee Minji’s life started out as a struggle. Her mother worked hard to be a decent parent, hoping to give her only child a great life. She managed to somehow juggle a newborn and two jobs, but when the child turned just three years old, it was evident that raising her alone was not the best option. Instead of forcing her through a life of undernourishment and disappointment, she was dropped off on the doorstep of an orphanage. For the first few years of her life as an orphan, the child held onto the hope that her mother would return and bring her home. The gravity of her situation never quite settled in, and she floated through her stay in the orphanage with a sense of denial. She made friends, played with neighborhood kids on the playground, and lived happily despite her circumstances.ㅤWhen she was seven, Mina was transferred into the foster system, bouncing from family to family while waiting for a forever home. Through it all, it was music that kept her going. She loved to sing and dance, filling each of her homes with a constant melody. She would practice songs on the radio, performing for her friends after class and reveling in their attention. From such a young age, she fantasized about being a star. All she wanted in life was to inspire thousands of fans and prove to the world that you can always make something out of nothing. It was a pipe-dream, but she had never really been one to care about reality.ㅤAt twelve years old, she was moved once again, this time into a group home for troubled teens. Although she was polite and well-behaved, she knew it would be easier to keep her with others her own age, as rowdy and troublesome as they might have been. For two years, she remained in the home in Daegu, throwing herself into music instead of focusing on adoption. But shortly after her fifteenth birthday, to the surprise of everyone around her, adoption found her anyway.ㅤThe woman who showed interest in her was on the older side, claiming that she hadn’t settled down in time to start her own family. She knew she couldn’t raise a child at this point, but still dreamed of having someone in her life to fill that void. When she met the hopeful teen, everything seemed to fall into place, and her adoption was arranged immediately. The life that Mina had always known was swept away, and the pair relocated themselves to Seoul in the hopes of starting a new life together. Having a mother figure felt so foreign, but her new mother (or “auntie”, as she insisted on being called) was everything she could have hoped for.ㅤNot long after their little family was formed, her auntie learned of Mina’s hopes to become an idol. The teenager expected her to laugh it off like everyone else, but instead found that the woman was in full support of her dream. Wanting the best for her new child, she encouraged Mina to audition to a number of entertainment companies in the city. It took over a year for an offer to come in, but it paid off when she was accepted as a trainee for a brand new company: DM Records. With proper trainers, she worked to improve both her singing and dancing, as well as learned how to rap―a skill that she quickly picked up on. Her bright demeanor and diligent work ethic caught the attention of the CEOs, who decided to pick her for their first group, originally called Project LOVE.ㅤOn February 14th, 2010, Mina debuted as the main rapper and lead dancer of L:OVELESS, a six member girl group that found instant success with their first song, Bo Peep (Follow Me). The song wasn’t exactly her favorite―she might have even gone so far as to say she hated it―but it climbed the music charts faster than anyone could have imagined and immediately labeled them as the rookie group to keep an eye on. Capitalizing off of that success, L:OVELESS had three comebacks by the end of the year, scoring eight music show wins and officially catapulted the group into stardom.ㅤL:OVELESS’ popularity came with a substantial amount of work, but Mina managed well enough. She cared more about the health and feelings of her members than she did herself, fitting into the role of “group mother” almost immediately. While she wasn’t the group’s leader, her maternal nature made her the peacemaker of the group, which was a position that they greatly needed thanks to Jade, their main vocalist. Although five of the six members got along really well, Jade seemed to go out of her way to make them miserable, usually by bullying the younger members. As the second oldest in the group, Mina did her best to protect the others from Jade’s harsh words, but it became so difficult to deal with that the company had to step in.ㅤOnly a year after their debut, L:OVELESS took a hit when Jade was kicked out of the group without warning. While most people believed her contract was terminated due to a sponsor scandal, some fans developed the narrative that Jade was bullied out of the group by the members, when in reality, it had been the opposite. It wasn’t until the CEO revealed that she was incompatible with the members and failed to show up to practice and events that the bullying narrative finally died down. Wanting to move on from the accusations, L:OVELESS continued to work their asses off and ended up debuting in both Japan and China. Their overseas schedules quickly became a priority, and as a result, their popularity in Korea began to slow down.ㅤFour years after their debut, their success finally came to a halt. When they experienced their worst sales to date in 2014, the group was forced into a hiatus to try and build themselves back up. Yet another member left the group, devastating Mina and strengthening the hold that she kept on the remaining three. She refused to let them fail, and decided to take things into her own hands. While the rest of the members focused on solo activities to rebuild their Korean reputation, the rapper trained under the company’s composers and producers to learn their trade. No longer would she sit through those horribly annoying songs. Instead, she would work as one of their producers, making sure to create music that they could be proud of.ㅤL:OVELESS ended their hiatus and made a comeback in 2015 with a title track created by Mina herself. The music she helped make gave them a brand new sound, and with it came new fans. One of their previous members eventually rejoined the group in 2018, which helped to build their popularity even more. After years of focusing on reaching their original level of success, L:OVELESS made their way back to the top of the charts with each release. The group celebrated their 10 year anniversary in 2020 by announcing Heart Media, a brand new label for the group to operate under.ㅤNow in charge of their own company, L:OVELESS are considered legends in the industry and have inspired many young hopefuls to follow their dreams of becoming musicians. It took a decade for her to achieve it, but Mina feels that she finally proved to everyone that she was able to make something extraordinary out of nothing.
